Introduction of cobalt basic knowledge   Cobalt is a shiny silver-gray metal, melting point 1495 °C, boiling point 2870°C, density 8.9g/cm3. Cobalt is ferromagnetic and scalable, and its mechanical properties is finer than iron. In the natural world it is wide distribution. Co-miners have cobaltite, skutterudite, et al. The cobalt content in the manganese nodules of the ocean floor is also great, and it exists in natural water, soil and plants and animals. The only stable isotope in the nature is cobalt 59.

  The chemical nature of cobalt is similar to iron and nickel. At room temperature it is ineffective with water and air, but above 300°C it can be oxidized, and fine cobalt powder automatically combustion. Cobalt can be dissolved in acid, and in concentrated nitric acid it will be passivated as result of oxidation films formed. When it is heated, it can be reacted dramaticly with oxygen, sulfur, chlorine and bromine.

  80% of Cobalt yield is for the production of various alloys. Cobalt presents a more good property in heat resistance with resistance and anti-corrosion. Cobalt compounds are used in paint, driers, catalyst and ceramic glaze.


Introduction of nickel basic knowledge   Nickel is a silver-white metal, melting point 1455°C, boiling point 2730°C, density 8.9g/cm3, valence 2 and 3. The ionization energy is 7.635 eV. Nickel has hard quality, magnetic, good plasticity and good corrosion resistance, and it is a moderate intensity of reductant.

  In nature, the main nickel mine is red nickel (Ni-arsenide) and arsenic-nickel (Ni-sulfur arsenide).

  Nickel is mainly used for the electroplating industry, nickel coin and manufacture of alloy. Fine nickel powder is used as a catalyst in the chemical industry. Nickel salts are mostly green. Nickel hydroxide is a brownish-black, and nickel oxide is a dark gray. Nickel oxide used to manufacture iron-nickel alkaline batteries.
